Sunday 16 June

Where’s my phone???

We had a tasty and filling crepe meal with Lubna yesterday evening. We knew that a thunderstorm was forecast that night. Lubna carries an umbrella with her everywhere “because she lives in Ulm”. We parted company on the city walls with lightening in the sky but not rain yet.

There was indeed heavy rain in the night but our tent was nice and solid. The Danube was quite high and running fast in the quiet early morning:

We had no food, no drink, no gas canister and no map, so we weren’t exactly sure where we were going except that we would follow the Danube cycle path. There was a break in the rain so we decided to make a run for it. Quickly packed our stuff, took down the wet tent, and bundled it all into panniers and onto the bike. So, we were just about to start. Me: where’s my glasses? Don’t know. Then “WHERE’S MY PHONE???”. This is getting serious. Check the toilets and shower room. Check the grass. We’re cold, wet, hungry. We’re going to have to unpack the entire bike to find them. Eventually, it turns out that they were still right inside the tent. Had been rolled up and strapped to the back of the bike.

It was then a long, cold, wet cycle ride. Actually, beautiful. Literally miles down forest paths or right next to the Danube with not a soul in sight.

Eventually, the sun peeped out. We discovered in the middle of nowhere the Gundelfingen fishing club serving tasty Kaesespaetzle. I associate it with mountain huts and skiing holidays but now confirm that the calorific intake works just as well for cycling:

Then we found the pic of wild flowers that we have been waiting for:

And now we are sitting in a campsite cum pub garden with super fast wi-fi and a view of the Danube through the gap in the hedge:

All’s well that ends well …
