Saturday 15 June

The fourth member of our team standing in a basic (but fairly expensive) campsite in Munderkingen.

Some one had decided to dig up the entire centre of the ancient town of Munderkingen making it difficult to find the route, find shops, FIND WIFI. Anyway, the next morning we found a lovely hotel with free wi-fi without a log in and … Homemade muesli with lots of nice fruit. And good coffee.

We didn’t see much of the Danube today. Our destination was Ulm which appeared to be about 60 km (not true, it was much closer) with no intermediate campsites (not true, there were a couple of lovely looking camp-on-a-farm style sites).

The Danube is opening out into huge lakes full of swans, moorhens, and a cacophony of frogs

By the time we got to Ulm the Danube was a huge river.

We had a nice afternoon being show round town by the wonderful Lubna who we met at Firjeh’s party in March and who is doing a PhD at Ulm University.

We started in a rush but arrived ahead of schedule. Our main learning for today is that we rely too much on Google. We are going to download a paid-for Danube path guide.

We didn’t see as much of the Danube today. The paths were often straight and fast. We sometimes approached the tree lined edges and immediately the hot air became damp. The strange thing is the river was huge by the time we fully rejoined it in Ulm. Like my sons. You blink and they are suddenly several inches taller than you.
