Friday 14 June

“Phones are charged. Happy life.”Together with our neighbours, a father and his two teenage sons, we sniffed out every hidden socket on this campsite. We bought coffee from the campsite shop this morning. It comes in real cups that you can take away and return because that is “better for the environment”. How cool is that!

Last tent standing in the morning. A recurrent theme …Today was a ride across agricultural land in broad valleys with some long straight roads. Then finally it took our tired legs into some steep hills. It was even difficult to push the bike up one of the. But, yes, those hours in the gym are paying off!We passed through a number of small towns. The quality of the sports facilities is amazing. Excellent football pitches, athletics tracks and tennis courts in each one.

The Danube meandered across ecologically important flood plains for much of the day.

We managed to get up a good speed on our tandem on a straight road, in the right gear, with a good rhythm. We could feel the hot, damp air rising of the fields. When we stopped to take the photo it was suddenly incredibly hot and clammy. Need to get going again with the wind in our hair.

Fruit juice in the historic town of Riedlingen.

Getting close to our destination of Mundenkingen.

Today the Danube was largely left on its own, meandering through large flat fields, sometimes in its own flood plain and sometimes in channels constructed long ago.

Today the river was a grass snake. Large, green and flexible, hiding in the long grass.

Are you sure that Chris is actually pedaling !? She looks extraordinarily composed and chic in that fancy rose dress… elegantly supping coffee in the morning sunshine and thence beer (?) on the terrace in town…

These first posts are great; do also write about food, drink and other folks you meet en-route..
